Jarred Vanderbilt gets huge injury update

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Jarred Vanderbilt received positive news Monday morning as his reevaluation determined that he is “cleared to begin a return to play progression.”

This is big news for the Lakers, as Vanderbilt is a crucial role player who has not played this season. Vanderbilt has missed the first ten games with bursitis in his left heel.

LA acquired the 24-year-old forward at the trade deadline last season. Vanderbilt made a significant impact as an elite defender and rebounder. The Lakers desperately need help crashing the glass, and Vanderbilt could help solve that early-season problem.

The team is currently in the bottom ten in allowing offensive rebounds. They must be aggressive in getting the rebound rather than allowing second chances for the opponent’s offense.

Vanderbilt contributed almost eight rebounds per game last season, which will be highly impactful.

Vanderbilt will also add more versatility to Darvin Ham’s lineups and be a key contributor once he is able to play.

It’s a good sign that team doctors have cleared him to ramp up towards playing in games. Once he is available to suit up, Vanderbilt could end up in the starting lineup, as he started many games for LA last season.

He has the ability to defend an opposing team’s top guard or forward, depending on the matchup. Rob Pelinka extended Vanderbilt’s contract this offseason with a four-year $48 million deal. This shows the team values what he contributes.

Whether “The Vandolorian” starts or comes off the bench, he will be a pivotal role player for the Lakers.
