Anthony Davis signs three-year extension with Lakers

Kevin Jairaj, USA TODAY Sports

Anthony Davis has signed a long-term extension to remain with the Lakers through the 2028 season. Davis signed a three-year $186 million max extension, making his total contract worth $270 million plus. It is the richest annual extension in league history at $62 million.

With Davis locked up long-term, he is the star LA will build around for the future. LeBron James is near the end of his career, and retirement is a possibility sometime in the next few seasons. Davis’ extension shows confidence that they believe he can be the catalyst to a championship even after James retires.

Davis won a championship in his first year with the Lakers in the 2019-20 season. He also had a stretch this season in December where he was playing like the best player in the league.

The 30-year-old big man is a very talented player and has the talent to be in MVP and Defensive Player of the Year conversations every season. However, Davis has struggled with his health throughout his career.

He was pivotal in LA’s turnaround this season as they went from the 13th seed at the trade deadline all the way to the Western Conference Finals.

Davis averaged 26/13/3 with two blocks this season. He set a career-high in rebounds per game (12.5) and field goal percentage (56.3%).

Davis needs to stay healthy, be aggressive, and set the tone for the Lakers. It’s time for Davis to take over the reins of the franchise, and this extension shows that the front office has the confidence for Davis to get it done.
